By the year 2054, the White Majority that commanded the destiny of the Northern American Continent for 280 years, would fall. In the wake of a growing crisis over the shortage of fresh water, that would engulf the entire world by the middle of the 21st century, and elevated water prices; a new political party would arise in the United States that would unite the Non-White communities under one political banner and seize power...

Majority Rules edition by Elan Rothschild Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

According to this speculative novel, the US is facing a future full of strife, high unemployment, and a world-wide battle over supplies of fresh water that will push the country to the edge of a revolution.

A new, far left political movement called the Transition Party whose constituency is made up of a coalition of non-white and Hispanic ethnic groups arises that will challenge the power of the entrenched, established parties. At the head of this new party is a multiracial man called Inti Khan who is a charismatic orator that gathers the groups together for a showdown with the federal government and big corporations. But he's a man without an apparent past who has been created and groomed by some men in the shadows precisely for the purpose of being the front man for this new movement.

On the opposite side is another man groomed for his job over decades, John Riley, the current president and member of the exclusive "Ivy Club" whose other members include past presidents and highly placed politicians and corporate moguls.

The story is presented as a series of historical articles prepared by an anonymous historian selected in the far future by an official group called the Committee of the Archives that has kept all of this, and presumably other, historical information sealed and hidden from the public for generations. This historian has been given only limited access to these secret archives and claims he must be circumspect in how he uses and publishes them. He also says he must remain anonymous to prevent any harm coming to his family because of his knowledge and writings.

The result is a sometimes repetitive, difficult to follow narrative of a "history" that jumps from topic to topic and decade to decade and back again as it covers several related topics separately. The choice by the author of telling the story in this manner was a grave mistake. The novel would have flowed much more smoothly if told in a continuous manner with the related events taking place in proper time sequence. It also would have allowed much more characterization and background for the main and other important characters. It also would have been much easier to follow the logic of the events that occur and made the motivation of the characters and their actions seem more real. The two curve balls thrown into the ending might have made much more sense as well if we could have been given the background of the these actions to understand why they were orchestrated by those in power. One in particular made no sense at all given the political situation at the time it was enacted. If the Transition Party was already in control of multiple states and a majority in Congress, why would they agree to something that would limit their power in the future?

There are other events that occur in the book that make me wonder if the author understands basic human nature, economics, and the law, but since this book is fiction, I'll give a pass on those simply for the sake of literary license. I do wonder about how any government in the Information Age could put such a lid on information that has been broadcast via mass media and over the Internet as described in the novel. Once on the Internet, it's not just other public servers that pick up and store information, but a lot of it is downloaded and saved/stored off line as well in private media. How anyone could capture and seal all of the photographs, articles, videos, and audio recordings of an individual and events that occurred in front of hundreds of thousands of people is beyond the realm of belief, in my opinion.

The book desperately needs to be re-edited by someone who better understands the standard rules of capitalization, punctuation, and word usage (example: "over-do" when the context is clear he means "over-due").

I'm giving the book 3 stars even with all of the weaknesses I've described because it did have some original thoughts and outlook that were interesting and thought-provoking. If the author would take the time to re-work those ideas into a more readable format and correct the multiple errors it has the potential to be worthy of more stars.

Majority Rules edition by Elan Rothschild Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Amazing book, a MUST read!
Bought the book and read it cover to cover in a matter of hours...I couldn't put it down. While its classified as fiction today, it wouldn't be too farfetched to imagine this fantasy becoming a reality in the not too distant future. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a possible glimpse into the future or just wants something thoughtful, creative and insightful to take their mind off all the mind-numbing political propaganda that tends to run rampant this time of year.
I really like political fiction but this is one I just couldn't get into. I tried but it just wasn't there for me.
